MANEROE: TULDSPLINGE
A speculative costume design Capstone project examining the ways costume and clothing impacts fictional culture developing and their role in establishing realistic fake societies. Based on four fictional cultures I developed, Maneroe: Tuldsplinge is a mini collection with four looks; each look centered around a different culture/country and a person who lives in that culture. The four cultures present in Maneroe: Tuldsplinge are: the mountainous and mineral rich nation of Zemi; the plains and sub-Tundra climate Qitgru; the rocky, aquatic and magical nation of Te Nolmsan, and the warm sun worshiping country of Perra.
PROCESS
The process of working on this Capstone project started in earnest around nine months ago when we were told to being to think about what we wanted to focus on. I knew I wanted to do a costume design collection and through talking with my teachers I ended up deciding to focus on how costume and clothing can elevate and make fictional societies feel real and weighted with history. We —my teachers and myself — chose four different fictional cultures that I had developed in my personal time to work on and develop over the coming months to establish colour schemes, materials, iconography, silhouettes and more that are unique and specific to each culture. Hundreds of hours were put into each look with complicated techniques such as embroidery, leather detailing/carving and dyeing, chainmail making, fabric dyeing, and rune painting requiring long hours of labour and experimentation.
As this was a costume design project, I was also encouraged to portray my collection through the lens of a film or television series proposal; which is how I ended up with Maneroe: Tulsplinge. The name Maneroe: Tuldsplinge comes from the fictional language of Perront, spoken by the Perran people; it means Maneroe (the name of the world in this fictional setting): the Hour of Divine Death. The plot of the prospective project is that all the nations of the world are assembling for a meeting of great importance where an unimaginable event occurs wherein after the characters portrayed through the collection must navigate a changed and broken world. I presented this proposed TV/Film project through film posters and a teaser trailer that supplemented the runway that my actors walked on the last day of school.
