Who I Am

Hi! My name is Emory Shawn Hart, I am an aspiring Costume Designer/Production Designer based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A recent graduate from LaSalle College Vancouver where I graduated with a Bachelors of Fashion Design, I also previously studied Architecture at the University of Toronto for two years before I made the switch to study fashion back in my home province. I want to work on projects that experiment with art and develop new worlds.

My design philosophy follows a simple yet unstoppable truth; I create because I am driven to do so. There is no moment when the urge to create or develop something new is absent. As such, I find inspiration and motivation all around me. While there is often no particular force that draws me towards creating or designing something new, the process itself tends to be the same. For the majority of projects that I work on, the final result appears first, before planning, colour or texture has been discussed. In that sense I often work backwards towards the beginning. I start with the final result and work backwards to develop the individual components needed.

My design method works well with a creative field such as film—costume or production design—since I can work from the bigger picture or idea very easily without getting lost in the small details and not being able to make a full product. It is very simple for my brain to get absorbed into a project and to give it all my effort, especially projects where I get to learn something new or expand on my working knowledge. I am inspired by the way different things are connected to us as people, communities and the wider world around us, and how that connection shifts and changes over time and space.

Having the most experience with costume design through my education as a Fashion Design student at LaSalle College Vancouver, I have worked to experiment and work with the production design side of film through prop making, set design, and experiments with video planning and filming.
